Is this a fossil or something man made. Found on a County Durham beach. I cut a small piece off it with a hacksaw and found it to be a slate material or something similar.

the north west cost of England is really famous for fossils actually, some of my best finds have been there.The coast near Whitby is especially good.
Last time I looked, it was on the North-East coast. Mind you, I've not been there for a while, so you never know...

Carboniferous period tree scale fossils are found at several points along the Durham coast. They originate from colliery spoil tipped into the sea in the bad old "Get Carter" days. More pics on www.durhamnature.co.uk
