Mine

I am having problem seeing anything in the leaf - any chance of a picture with bright light behind (a bright window) and a picture with light above (a window ledge)? Is the leaf flat or twisted in anyway? Can you see any features of the pupa, e.g. little "spikes" at one end?

Mine features

OK, I've tweaked the 2nd photo and added it as a 3rd with the brightness and contrast raised - hope that helps, certainly I can see clear lines of frass running along one side of the mine. The leaf has no twists etc. I can't see any pupal features other than it is oval - to see spikes etc I think I'd have to dissect it out which would preclude raising as an adult. However, there were quite a few of these, so I could probably get another...

Re: Mine features

Saying that there is frass running along one side of the mine suggests that it is a fly species. Have a look at the key here:

With internal pupation, I think you want 2

Good luck

Mine ID

Thanks for the info Robert - see possible ID above; if correct, unusual for Hampshire?

There is a record for Hants from Fleet on the British Leafminers web site: this is perhaps an under-recorded insect, so the published maps (e.g. NBN Gateway), don't give the full picture.

HBIC have one record from Pamber Forest in 1994 (they don't have the Fleet record), and that appears to be it. I feel a short note in the Dipterists Digest coming on...
