I got the scientific name from the FSC(field studies council) guide to ladybirds of the british isles.
Could someone tell me if this species has had different scientific names given to it in the past?
yes ladybird names with numbers in are often contracted by using the numbers rather than the names spelled out - using the numbers is incorrect according to the International Code of Zoologial Nomenclature, the reason is to avoid confusion, that each species only has one scientific name (and one consistent way of writing it). Also if you only have the number form it's hard to know how to pronounce the scientific name unless you know the Latin for 14- is quattourdecim.
Thankyou, very useful and intresting.
