Smooth Newt 2
Smooth Newts
Description:

In an ephemeral pond. It's on limestone, so my guess would be smooth not palmate - I think the latter prefer acidic conditions.

Acid conditions

There does seem to be some separation between smooth and palmate newts based on water acidity. However, I don't think that palmates necessarily prefer acidic water, they are just better able to tolerate it than smooth newts. In neutral ponds the larger smooth newts will outcompete the smaller palmate newts, but in acid ponds they are unable to do so.
