Hunted to extiction for their fur about 400 years ago, beavers are back in the wild in Tayside. SNH carried out a trapping trial in 2010 but this proved very unpopular both in Tayside and around the world once news spread. The trapping trail was halted after the only beaver caught died in captivity. Following a widely publicised campaign to 'Save the free beavers' The Scottish government announced that the animals in Tayside are to be studied and tolerated until the end of the Scottish beaver trial in 2015. The population of beavers living and breeding in Tayside was estimated at around 120 animal before the last breeding season. These numbers should rise to around 150 animals by Summer 2012.
