Medium to large, blue fly

Description:

A fly, at least 2cm long, with a bright blue shiny abdomen (light blue)and black head and thorax, drowned in a puddle in riverside woodland.

There's a lot of life in that puddle! As well as the St Mark's Fly there is a water cricket (one of the Velia species) to the left of the photo, as well as lots of other fly larvae in the water.
