What a handsome beastie!
Your fly certainly has the look of a Carcelia species with large eyes and the orange scutellum. These are a fairly tricky genus to ID - males can be separated by the differences in genitalia but females are more difficult and you have to measure eye/head width ratios. There are also 2 species of Carcelia that are "new to Britain" since Belshaw's key was produced. Carcelia sp is the best that can be done from a photo like this.

Thanks, Matt. I just wanted to know I was not missing something obvious. I notice that the Tachinid website has an updated key to the genus, so I shall try to run it through that later...I have the specimen.
