Thanks Syrphus,

which features should I focus on? Next time I might take a specimen and take better close ups.

This is not an easy genus,

This is not an easy genus, especially in the south. The best advice is to get the Skinner & Allen Naturalist's Handbook on ants, which omits a couple of species recently separated or discovered, but is OK for the Myrmica in Wales.

The key features are the shape of the scape (long basal segment of the antennae, the shape of the petiole (first waist segment) and the length of the spines on the back of the thorax.

For a picture, take a full-face, a shot showing the scape, and a side-on of the waist. Even then, no-one will make any promises!
