Species behaviour

The recent find of a goldfinch wing near our feeders reminds me of a behavioural difference in the feeding behaviour between goldfinch and other finches and tits that use our feeders. Very noticeably, goldfinches spent much longer periods perching and eating than other birds. Wheras great- and blue-tits grab a seed or two and fly off, goldfinches can spend minutes perched and eating. Greenfinches may perch for a short period but much much less than goldfinches.

A consequence is that goldfinches are much more prone to predation from our Sparrowhawk(s) than other birds. Early in the 'fledging season' I see up to a dozen goldfinch at a time - including about 50% juveniles. These numbers rapidly decline to three or four. My inference that this is due to predation is supported by the frequent finds of goldfinch feathers and body parts at the time that the numbers are declining
