TRIANGULAR THING WITH SPIKE

Observed: 2nd May 2012 By: Lucy CorranderLucy Corrander’s reputation in InvertebratesLucy Corrander’s reputation in InvertebratesLucy Corrander’s reputation in Invertebrates
Description:

About half an inch long, triangular body, furry like a bee. Spike as long as its body sticking out at front.(Not sure if the two tiny bits sticking out at back are part of its body or a bit of leg showing.) Was hovering a couple of inches above gravel. Maintained position long enough to take one photograph - then it flew away. Because it was hovering, its wings don't show in the picture but they were narrow, black and stuck out at right angles from its body. Have never seen anything like it before with which to compare it.

TRIANGULAR THING WITH SPIKE

Good description. Often seen at this time of the year and earlier particularly near cowslips, primroses and lungworts.
