A wasp?

Observed: 20th March 2010 By: lauradee

I found this when I was doing some gardening. It seems to be a very small wasp but I have never seen anything similar so I thought I would post it here to see if anyone can let me know.

Ichneumon wasp

You're quite right in thinking this is one of the Hymenoptera, and the very long antennae with lots of small segments indicate that it is one of the ichneumon wasps. These parasitic creatures lay their eggs inside other invertebrates, especially into the caterpillars of moths and butterflies.
