Description:

The lower mandible is black rather than orange, making this a male. Whether the chicks have hatched is uncertain; the visits to the nest were infrequent, and there was no washing following feeding.

Kingfisher

Nice picture of one of my favourite birds Simon, I can never get over how small they are for some reason. Larger than life colours I suppose!

You're right about their size. And fast, too!
In folklore it was believed that, if you hanged up a dried kingfisher, it would turn on its string to indicate wind direction. You'd have to catch one first though, and I bet that wouldn't be easy...
