Description:

There is some variation in the markings of these two birds, which I think are both lesser redpolls, rather than any of the other incarnations of redpoll.

Tricky

I agree with you on the right hand bird, definitely. The left hand bird is very pale on the rump/mantle and I would want to see it from different angles to rule out flammea (though the wing-bar looks more cabaret). Trouble is that, at this time of year, plumage is so worn after the winter that feather edges have worn off and appearance changes...tricky.
