While I accept your point that names have been updated, Saccharina latissima is not a name recognised by the (slightly out-of-date) dictionary version lying behind iSpot.
There has been a long debate about the principle in regard to Black-headed Gull (search the site for Chroicocephalus for details).
The recommendation is that if the first name offered is correct (as L. saccharina is even now, and unless declared invalid under the rules of nomenclature always will be), it should not be trumped by a synonym, especially when that synonym is not in the dictionary.
One advantage here, apart from avoiding discouraging less specialist users, is that as soon as Laminaria becomes the 'likely ID' (as it is now after I agreed with it) other instances are shown in the lower 'related' carousel.
