'...view of the red cap'

Not so much a red 'cap' as a red 'poll', presumably. Does what it says on the tin...

Increased vocabulary

Thanks, ophrys, you made me look up that poll word. I didn't know it before. ;-)

Simon Walker's picture

Yes, but will you ever use it?

Can you imagine using the word in conversation? No-one would know what you meant (except Ophrys, bless him!)

Here's a question for you (and Ophrys): why do we have a Redpoll, but a Blackcap? ;-)

I wouldn't spend too much time on it, personally. Life's too short, especially when you get my age...

Doubt it

Given the state of my thatch now, I doubt I'll ever be able to use it, referring to myself, anyway. Many years ago, I could have said I was a redpoll myself. :D

Poll, I think is like the

Poll, I think is like the hairy bit between the horns on cattle and not a complete cap. So, it might be taken from this.

polle

polle was a Low German word for the top of the head, apparently. Not as full as a cap, then, but a red area atop the head.

There...we have all learnt something important. ;)
