Whoops - I've just noticed the length. Squirrel can you confirm the length - this is huge!! My ID is almost certainly wrong!!

well was about the size of a big devils coach horse beetle, if not 4cms close to it

I think this size is way too

I think this size is way too large. Even 35mm for O. olens would be unusual, and the other large staphs would not reach that (Staph. erythropterus and Creophilus maxillosus are around 20mm usually - but they look bigger). It is not uncommon to over-estimate size, and a 40mm beetle would be an amazing sight.

ok yes sorry think i had spent to long looking at things 2-5mms before hand so about 25-30mms more like it
