Good to see these two (crow and rook) side by side - I know them individually, but I often find them very hard to id in the field, when the beak colour isn't too clear.
I know what you mean, the light can sometimes make the bill of a crow very light in colour. I saw a crow the other day with chalk all over its bill and I had to take a second look to confirm the ID.
