As I understand it Ficaria verna is the latest and most up to date scientific name, although Ranunculus Ficaria is still acceptable.

The separation of Ficaria as a genus different to Ranunculus appears to depend on
Sepals 3 (not 5)
Root tubers rounded at tip (tubers not usually present but if so pointed at tip)
Petals 7-12 (5, <5, or many)
ok, just that EOL uses Ranunculus
It seems to me important to use up-to-date names as these will be used by the next generation (til they change again!) and if you use old names, it will cause even more comfusion!
