Vespula (Paravespula)

Can anyone more familiar with taxonomic rules explain what is going on with the genus suggested by iSpot here?

Paravespula

The genus suggested by iSpot is Vespula. However, V. germanica is in the sub-genus Paravespula (as is V. vulgaris)

OK

Although wasps are the only group where I have seen this form of presentation on iSpot (or elsewhere for that matter). Is it just an iSpot oddity to list to subgenus like this or is there something unusual about wasps that makes it worth doing?

Search I-spot

Sometimes i have found the get recommended a bit funny and used a search for a few specimens with plenty of agreement and copy the scientific name over to be solution. With social wasps a front view showing the markings on the mouth parts is best for a good ID.
