A large insect photographed by a friend in her garden in June 2007

I thought the curious spines on the thorax were unlike any bumble bee structure..?
I thought they were spines too until I looked at the original image. They look more like matted tufts of wet hairs after heavy rain to me and no bee I can think of has a spiny thorax. Maybe you could ask your friend if it had been wet that day and to look at the original image at high resolution to see if the "wet" theory makes sense.

Thanks Nick. I've looked at another image and I'm sure you are right. In the further image water droplets can be clearly seen on the wings anfd there is a better impression of gross sogginess of the whole bee. Many thanks for your help.
OK, good to hear the bee mystery is solved. It did look odd...!
