It was just the one shot I managed to get before it took off.
Michael S's identification suggests the Autumn ringlet which is possible (not too late in the year) as the sighting was towards the south of France and a week later (the year before) I took another photo of an Autumn ringlet but the patch on the wing was not the pale yellow as on this one, see http://www.casteldecantobre.co.uk/images/Butterflies/P1080698.JPG
