see how it's grown for some years on a vertical trunk and then a few years more on a horizontal one

Remarkable but it has to get those spores down the tubes so if its not level then they won't get dispersed?

does look a bit like Ganoderma but far from sure about this, was it on oak, perhaps G. pfeifferi.
