Indicator species

Again, I can't advise on your particular area but Phyllitis scolopendrium is considered an ancient woodland indicator species in Devon... particularly for base-rich calcareous soils.

Brick walls

I have seen Hart's-tongue growing out of brick walls locally. I am inclined to say it might be a pioneer species in my area.
