Description:

I am putting this swarm of Green-bottled flies on in response to comments on a more recent observation.
I would love to know what had attracted them and a few of other species to this to this little square yard of ground. I could not smell anything obvious that would be a give-away.

Swarm

Might it be where a dog has cocked its leg, or something like that?

Not doggy

It is not a doggy sort of place. I was thinking that something had died in a burrow below the ground such as a Rabbit or more likely a poisoned rat. It looked like there were old burrows that were partly over grown.
There are buildings about 100 yards away from the location.

Beetles

You could well be right. Any sign of any burying beetles with the swarm?

No beetles

There was a bee looking for a nest site indicating that burrowing activity was present.
The beetles would have gone under ground it they were there.
