Although this is not C atramentaria the alternative of C micaceus normally grows from dead wood. Do you know if this was the case?
Checking the before and after photos and noting the silverweed means I'm pretty sure these are in the wood and would have been close to trees. While I can't see dead wood in the photo there is fallen and felled wood around. I'll try and get more details of the context in the future. (Thank you everyone for the identifications).
