Thanks James. One of the factors in leading me to the id was the size of the bird, which was easily as big as a nearby buzzard. What I didn't consider at the time was the age and therefore size of the (un-photographed) buzzard, and the location, which was from a much higher vantage point than I usually see the birds, and therefore offering a completely new perspective on size etc.
