Rather pale

Rather pale for V. nigrescens, but it is variable in colour. I tried making it V. macrostoma, and some of the perithecia do seem to be rather flat-topped as in that species, but on balance I think it is correctly named. Really needs a section of the perithecia and some spore measurements.

(I checked my own photographs of both species. Conclusion: I need better photographs!)

Thanks Alan

My camera may be responsible for the pale colour. Now that you mention it, I am sure this was more black than dark brown in the field. It was the striking contrast with the Caloplaca that drew me to it.

Spore measurements will have to wait a while until I can invest in a microscope. Meanwhile, I'll read up on V. macrostoma.
