Great Crested Grebe

Great Crested Grebe, younger bird
Description:

I'm pretty sure this is a young bird, hatched last year. It doesn't have the flamboyant plummage of other birds I'm seeing about now. Can anyone confirm this?

Could Be

One of the ringers may be able to say definitively from this picture; I can’t, though I’m inclined to agree with 2nd year spring.

www.ibercajalav.net/img/06_GreatCrestedGrebePcristatus.pdf has some interesting information, indeed this is a great site and this is an uncharacteristically spartan entry, normally there are loads of photos illustrating the text.

Second Spring Bird?

Hm. Here's what it says about 2nd year spring birds: "flight feathers and outer greater coverts with juvenile pattern; ornaments on head poorly developed; hind rim of tarsus slightly serrated." Can't see the tarsus, and the coverts aren't clear as far as I can tell; but the head ornaments are clearly lot in the same league as an adult. On balance of probability, I think this is second spring. Thanks for the information, Ray. I'll have a nose round that site.
