Unknown Mushroom

Observed: 16th March 2012 By: kieranc23kieranc23’s reputation in Fungi and Lichenskieranc23’s reputation in Fungi and Lichens

A single mushroom I found growing in my compost bin in March 2012. Please can you identify it for me?

Caution: Do NOT use iSpot to identify fungi to eat!

Some fungi are very poisonous so a mistaken ID could have serious consequences.

Unknown Mushroom

Could be a Brown Birch Bolete or similar but not 100% sure.

Purple stripes

I can see the purple markings on the stem that are seen on Blewits.
Boletes have pores and the specimen here has gills.
I am very sure it is not a Bolete.

Definitely a blewit. Just a comment relating to the "it's an edible one" above, be very very careful when you are considering eating wild mushrooms, you need to be 100% sure of the identification; I'd recommend spending considerable time learning in the field with a mycologist (fungi specialist) before even considering eating anything that you've not bought in a shop! And, after all that, some people react badly to certain "edible" mushrooms, sadly blewits don't agree with me :o(
