Honey Fungus

Growing on the stump of an old horse chestnut tree. Last summer the compost heap, which was close by, was full of the black boot lace-like structures which are associated with honey fungus. I still don't know whether I can use that lovely compost! Although my understanding is that honey fungus is ubiquitous anyway, can spread over a wide area, and will only harm sickly or very young plants. Please correct me if I'm wrong!

Caution: Do NOT use iSpot to identify fungi to eat!

Some fungi are very poisonous so a mistaken ID could have serious consequences.
