Popular books are very misleading here, giving O luteus as the default species, when there are several very similar. There's really no way to ID them without a specimen.
Technically they don't sting, because stings are modified ovipositors injecting venom while ichneumons only have the unmodified version. But they can pierce the skin with their ovipositor which gives the impression of a sting.
