Frog spawn in trees

In a 3-hectare wet woodland in northern Devon we found numerous clumps of frog spawn in trees and on the top of fence posts. Some fresh-looking (as in the photo), some dried out and looking like it had been there for days. Any ideas as to why it was there? No sign of frogs (alive or dead)or frog parts, either on the trees or below them. There are buzzards and corvids around, other large birds (eg herons and gulls) rarely seen.
