Description:

Slimy/gelatinous filaments attached to rocks in a slow-moving stream. Greyish mass in life. Under microscope, highly and finely branched structure, with associated scattered spheres and microscopically thin terminal branches and slight constrictions along the length. Pale green, but no obvious cell structure at x30. The main branches are c 0.5mm diameter.

Thanks for that, John. This thing baffled me totally. My original guess was alga, but I would never have made it a red alga.
