Description:

Small brown beetle 5mm in length found under dead leaves in garden. Seems to have lost a leg.

Brown beetle

Whilst I agree with the insect's ID as a plant bug this makes it a BUG (Hemiptera) not a beetle (Coleoptera)

I am no expert in these bugs, but I think L. rugulipennis is not correct. See http://www.britishbugs.org.uk/heteroptera/Miridae/lygocoris_rugicollis.html, and compare details of shape, sculpture and structure of antennae.
