Green algal cells

Yes, the presence of slightly raised patches of green algal cells is pretty standard amongst all Cladonia species that lack a covering of soredia, and use of the character in identification keys is actually rather irresponsible in my view.

It does NOT reliably separate rangiformis from furcata. or zopfii from uncialis, and as Nigel says, C. portentosa often shows the same character. Age, dampness of the specimen, local environment, all affect this.

Fortunately, no doubt here. Excellent material of C. rangiformis.
