During a mild winter the earthworms in my stony garden build piles of stones and leaves at the entrance to their worm holes. This provides a winter food store and helps the vegetation to compost making it easier to digest. It amazing to think they can move such large (10mm) pebbles. I guess they do it at night as I have never seen them and they only take a night to build or repair.
