Feather a
Description:

Dark feather with white mesh pattern enclosing white spots. Found on grass recreation field area between housing and farmland. Length of feather about 8cm to 10cm. Suggest might belong to a pheasant and wondered about possibly belonging to an owl/sparrow hawk/woodpecker (although none of these suggestions seem convincing).

Hi pf339, This is definitely

Hi pf339,

This is definitely from a guineafowl, probably kept with other poultry on a nearby farmyard. They are reputed to be good 'guard dogs' making a racket when anyone comes around.

A short history is given here:

Guineafowl - Many thanks

Hi
Thank you for the identification and the link to a short history.
I had no idea about guineafowl (explains why the feather was such a mystery to me). Shall now look carefully to see if I can spot any at the nearby farms.
Very grateful for your help.
