Multi-stemmed shrub, growing in a mixed hedge along a footpath. Leaves just beginning to show, reddish-green in colour, strong smelling. Is this definitely elder and is this the actual 'budburst' as required when identifying for 'Nature's Calendar'?

According to Reader's Digest Guide to Trees and Shrubs of Britain', the twigs are 'fawn, brittle, with raised breathing pores' - well, I've learnt something new about elder today - thank you bumble for posting your photo and letting me discover its 'breathing pores'!
