Just going on the bill, it seems grebe-like (pointy) rather than duck-like (broad)

Fantastic! Little Grebes have the ability either to look really tiny and like a little fluffy ball, or to look quite large and sleek, like the bird in your picture.
Common Scoter, though, is a larger duck, the size of a Wigeon.
Do you nip down to Alton Water at all? I used to see some nice birds there, when I lived in Ipswich.

Haven't been to Alton Water for ages. I'll add it to my list of places to visit next time I have a few hours to myself. Or maybe as a destination for my daughter's next driving practice :-)
