I think this is Curled Octopus , Eledone cirrhosa, as I can only see one row of suckers on each arm(vulgaris has a double row)and is common north of the English Channel
Alan thanks for pointing this feature out.
It seems to be that a Curled Octopus has mostly straight singular lines on the arms, but towards the thinner ends, the suckers can become a little staggered?
The Marlin image for common shows very obvious double lines of many tightly packed suckers. I hope you get a look at some of the octopus Ive posted, I think they are all Curled octopus, without exception, as a result of your info above. The staggered suckers at the ends of the arms can be a little confusing on E.cirrhosa, that is if I am correct?????
Thats interesting re single and double rows of suckers, I have a few dead octopus photographed- storm casualties from 2 years back, I think they all have single rows of suckers visible which could mean they are curled octopus and not common, I'll post a pic or 2 soon.
This one (though it isnt easy to see) seems to be the curled octopus as Alan says, and it seems several ones Ive encountered are the same species too.
What do you think yourself?
I have to admit my knowledge on curled octopi is book based and my knowledge of Octopus vulgaris is culinary. I cannot coment on the staggered row of suckers in E cirrhosa.Perhaps there is an expert out there who could give definitive advice I look forward to the pics
It's incredible how difficult it is to get a proper photo of octopi tentacles, which seems partly the inability of cameras to focus on the white (& octopus are reluctant to show their undersides).I've photod the curled o.(I'm sure) 2ce & failed (but good pictures otherwise). They are staggered I'm sure but I'm not an expert.
Thanks for your comments, and I'm really pleased someone spotted the ID mistake! Octopus are definitely not my ID strong point and I'm happy to go with the experts. next time I'll try and get a better photo of the tentacles themselves.
