Anthills on ancient grassland Hatfield Forest

These round anthills are indicators of ancient grassland. Built by Yellow Meadow Ant colonies, they are much larger below the surface. South-east facing sides may be flatter to maximise exposure to the warmth of the sun. These ants are a very popular food source for Green Woodpeckers.
