Hypoxylon

I am almost sure this is Hypoxylon rather than a lichen. Someone may be able to suggest which species.

Hypoxylon

Thank you Nigel. I will change the description after your suggestion, not to confuse other users.
Then this is a fungus colonizing dead wood only? I could find it only on this tree trunk.

Thank you

Pass

Sorry, I don't know much about Hypoxylon (or most non-lichenised fungi). A quick search suggests it can get a foothold on drought-stressed trees.
