Eristalis tenax

http://naturewonders.piwigo.com/picture?/777/category/1-syrphidae tends to support tenax because of the "broader facial stripe between the eyes" which is evident when comparing the photos.

Facial stripe

The facial stripe is not actually visible in either of these two pictures. It runs down the front of the face, starting below the antennae...hence you can't see it at all, here.

As Ian Says no Face if we had

As Ian Says no Face if we had legs , Face and other Key ID features it would be easy unfortunately with field Photography they rarely sit still , and therein is the challenge :-)

I have a a littel system if I see a potential Candidate and aim to approach withot casting shadow a shadow cast accross the vertex or crude eyes is perceived as movement . I then Aim to get on Overview shot , await a leg opportunity preferablt Front and rear A Side Shot and then if it remains a Face !! Hard Work

HTH Happy Snapping

Best Wishes
