Description:

Dark purple, thistle-like with slightly ridged but hairless stem and no prickles. The leaves are longish oval with a smoothly serated edge.

Centaurea nigra is a very different plant, with bracts completely unlike this plant. See http://www.plant-identification.co.uk/skye/compositae/centaurea-nigra.htm. If you view the posted picture at full size, the nature of the bracts is obvious.
