Flock of finches? in alder
Small bird with wing flash
Small bird with white underside
Description:

Flock of finches (including goldfinches) feeding on alder. Sorry about very poor photo quality (zoomed in and not very good lighting). Some of them had red on tops of heads and red on chests - redpolls? Or perhaps linnets, but not the right habitat/behaviour? Maybe with bramblings mixed in too? I realise that it may well not be possible to tell!

Redpoll

You are right that Linnets are unlikely to be hanging upside down in an Alder. Redpolls and Siskins are the most likely, though Goldfinches are often there, too. These are probably Lesser Redpolls, the normal redpoll in this country.

thanks - very helpful

They definitely weren't siskins (though I think I may have seen them earlier in another site). I know goldfinches, as I have them in my garden, and there were goldfinches too, but I'm not familiar with redpolls, linnets or bramblings, so your comments are very helpful.

Brambling

Brambling are like a slightly chunky version of a Chaffinch, with a noticeable white rump. They would not be feeding like this in a tree, but might be sitting in it! They feed on the ground, especially beneath Beech trees. Linnets also feed on the ground mainly. If you know Siskin, that pretty much leaves just Redpoll. Our local birds are Lesser Redpolls (cabaret), but Common or Mealy Redpolls (flammea), from the continent, are not that uncommon at this time of year. The latter are often larger, paler and have an overall frosty feel to them (though some are very similar). If you search on iSpot, you will find examples of all of these.
