Description:

Adult Great Spotted Woodpecker, he/she hung around this tree for about ten minutes going up one branch and then the next and so on....unfortunately he didn't 'peck' once!

He/she?

He is a she. Juveniles (male and female) have a red crown this changes as they moult, the male gets a red patch at the back of the head whilst the female loses all red on the head.

Between your pictures we can see there is a total absence of red on this bird’s head therefore it is female.
