They look very cute from a short distance munching away at the feeders but, when I get up close, I can't help but feel that there is something vaguely sinister or threatening about the appearance of the red mask of a Goldfinch.
Love 'em, though. ;-)

Cute ...

... they may be but I agree about the sinister bit and have you ever seen slow motion film of them in aerial combat (as they are prone to do) around a feeder? They are vicious too.

No ...

... Ray, I haven't but I can imagine a little - that beak looks very business-like.

I'm still pondering over those Darters, not sure I can make my mind up. Regards Chris

Thanks ...

... and the dragons continue to baffle me, too. I'd like to discuss them with RoyW but he's away, I think. :)

I think they are beautiful birds! You often see them in mediaeval art as a symbol of the crucifixion - the story is they got their red heads because they tried to pluck the thorns out of Christ's head! E.g. http://wdtprs.com/blog/2013/08/the-feeder-feed-chicago-edition/ and http://www.bbc.co.uk/arts/yourpaintings/paintings/madonna-of-the-goldfin...

They were also believed to help protect against the Plague.
