Among the slug pellets on a neighbour's allotment. Are those short wing-cases? Why is it rust-coloured? is it a nymph or a newly emerged Meadow Grasshopper? or something..

You're right, it is a nymph. The colour is not unusual for a nymph, but the adult will be less brightly coloured.
