Description:

The image is a still from a video produced by a TRAIL CAMERA which is used to observe the activity at an artificial badger sett.It is located close to my home but for security reasons, I would wish not to give the exact location. There are 2 videos on my You Tube channel which feature the little owl, recorded within a couple of days of each other. The full video from which this is a still can be seen via this link.....

Are there any other records of this sort of behaviour?

Little owls

I've not come across little owls using badger setts but they often share with rabbits so I don't see why they should not share with badgers, except of course rabbits are unlikely to eat their eggs!

Do you think it is nesting in there or using it as a roost? In winter they often roost well away from their nest sites, we have one roosting in our roof at the moment but they have not bred there for 10 years.

Little Owl/Badger Sett

Hi Graham,
I have two video clips which feature the Little Owl, created by a Trail camera a couple of days apart. This one here is daylight but the other is in darkness (late December 2010).
I think that the owl was just "checking out" the underground situation as since then there has been no sign of the Owls on the trail camera records.
Many thanks,

Ron.

Little owls

Sounds like it was prospecting or using as a temporary roost site.
