Better to call it a Feral Pigeon, as it will never have seen a proper rock in its life, I suspect!
My Flickr photos...
What's that its standing on, if not a rock?! THe homing instincts of pigeons are well known, and this one clearly knows a rock when it sees one! ;-)

Feral Pigeon I'm Afraid...
I am confused, KelsaeJohn! Did you mean to offer a different identification? Columba livia is Rock Dove and Feral Pigeon. I don't know what a Rock Pigeon is! ;)
Sorry about the confusion! I had thought that Jonathan had identified it as a Rock Dove. My own thought, initially, it was a Feral Pigeon but, after looking at the picture a bit more I decided it was more likely to be a Rock Dove/Feral Pigeon X. I selected that option from the options that came up in the drop down menu and iSpot came up with the latin name and then changed the common name to that showing on my 'revised' ID.
P.S. I don't know what a Rock Pigeon is either!
I know how you feel...sometimes I think iSpot is thinking for us and telling us we are wrong in our ID!!
I've changed it to Feral Pigeon, which is possibly a bit churlish, as the scientific name is the same. I think we should be calling this one a Feral pigeon, though, as it is not one of those with identical plumage to the wild birds.
Yes, it is annoying! I've just had another look at the drop down list of Common Name options - just to make sure I was correct in what I said to you before. And I was! I honestly don't know why iSpot provide an option for Rock Dove/Feral Pigeon (By the way I did type 'Feral Pigeon') but then chose the 'Feral Pigeon/Rock Dove option and, well, you know the rest!
P.S. Can I now 'Agree' your Feral Pigeon ID?
Of course...or stick it down yourself and I'll agree with you.
Very kind of you Ian - but I'll just agree yours.
Just to simplify things for anyone who might be slightly confused. If you enter Rock Dove or Feral Pigeon as an ID, iSpot changes it to Rock Pigeon; a new bird for me and everyone else :)
Gosh. What a celebrity this bird has become. The names come from the species dictionary curated by the NHM and as used by NBN. We don't make them up. Honest!
